Uhaul
Gen U
Challenge: Among current generations, Gen Z moves the most frequently and drives the least, with economic factors largely to blame for both.
Insight: Uhaul is known for cheap, on-demand moving equipment, but it’s only available to drivers — leaving many Gen Zers at a loss whenever they (inevitably) need to move.
Idea: What if Uhaul closed the loop, and helped Gen Z get their drivers’ license too?
For various reasons, Gen Z is choosing not to get their drivers license at significantly higher rates than previous generations.
To encourage young Canadians to get licensed, Uhaul is leveraging its resources to address three common barriers which prevent Gen Z from getting behind the wheel more: lack of confidence, vehicle access, and associated costs.
3 Reasons Why
For years, Uhaul has administered its own training course to help employees build confidence behind the wheel. Now, Uhaul is offering that same course to Gen Z — or, as we like to call them, Gen U.
At participating locations, lessons will consist of supervised classes taught by Uhaul driving instructors, and students will be given access to Uhaul’s proprietary educational materials, free of charge.
Class is in Session
If there’s one thing Gen U could use a break on — it’s rental costs.
To reward participants for learning how to drive Uhaul vehicles the right way, those who complete 5 Gen U driving lessons will be given a commemorative certificate, one that contains a lifetime discount code, so whenever they have to move in the future, they’ll save more than other generations for a change.
Certified to Save
Anywhere from 500,000 to 750,000 young Canadians struggle to get their drivers’ license because they don’t have a vehicle to practice with. Luckily, with over 1,700 retail locations coast to coast, accessing a Uhaul is always easy.
For Zoomers who have their G2 (or equivalent license) and simply need a vehicle to practice with, Uhaul is offering a discounted rate for young drivers at every location in Canada — as long as they have their drivers test booked within 1 month of their rental date.
Availability
One of the biggest reasons Gen U opts not to get their drivers license are the costs associated with Drivers’ Ed and practical tests. What’s more: many young Canadians are forced to rent a car for their tests if they don’t own one.
Never one to turn down some free advertising, Uhaul is offering a special deal for Zoomers looking to economize: if they do their practical exam in a Uhaul (and pass), Uhaul will pay for their test fees, no questions asked.
